Born in 1919 at Kancheepuram, Srimati D. K. Pattammal evinced keen interest in music from an early age. Her latent power was first recognised when she was only thirteen. Music came to her naturally, and though she did not have the benefit of training under any single Guru, she received guidance and advice of reputed musicians and scholars like the late Ambi Dikshitar and Shri T. L. Venkatarama Aiyar. Srimati Pattammal has a mastery over the kritis of Dikshi- tar and is equally at home with the compositions of Thyagaraja and Shyama Sastri, thus covering the music of the three great composers of Karnatak music. Her restrained classical style and her exposition of laya and bhava form a special feature of her music. Karnatak music today is indebted to her for chaste presentation of raga, correct ennunciation and renderings of pallavi in difficult talas. I present to you, Sir, Srimati D. K. Pattammal for the Akademi Award for vocal music of the Karnatak school.
