Born on 15 June 1932 in Udaipur, Rajasthan, Shri Zia Fariduddin Dagar learnt Dhrupad
and the Rudra Veena from his father Ustad Ziauddin Dagar, and his elder brother Zia
Mohiuddin Dagar in the Dagarbani tradition of his family.
Shri Fariduddin Dagar has established himself as a leading vocalist who is known for the purity of his style. He has also distinguished himself as an eminent guru and has trained a number of students. Among his disciples are Ritwik Sanyal, Pushparaj Koshti, Gundecha Brothers, Bahauddin Dagar, and Uday Bhawalkar. He has performed widely in India and abroad and has lectured extensively on Dhrupad.
Shri Dagar has been honoured by various prestigious organizations and has received many titles and awards including the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1988), Tansen Samman (1993) by the Government of Madhya Pradesh, the Lifetime Achievement Award (2005) conferred by the North American Dhrupad Association (NADA), and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1994). He has a large number of recordings to his credit.
Shri Zia Fariduddin Dagar is elected Tagore Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi for his contribution to Indian music.
