Shri Gobi Subramaniyan was Born 12 July 1974 in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. A Science graduate in Mathematics, Shri Gobi has been a traditional Bhagavatha Mela actor performing both the male and female characters. He received training in Bhagavatha Mela under Guru ‘Bharatham’ R. Mahalingam. He has also learnt Bharatanatyam from Kalimamani B. Herambanathan, Thanjavur. Trained in make up and costume making by S.P. Srinivasan, Shri S. Gobi is learning ‘Mirudangam’ under Padmavibhushan Umayalapuram K. Sivaraman and made a mark as a young talent early in life.
He further received training from Prof. S. Ramanujam, Thanjavur and Smt Anita Ratnam, Arangam Trust working on innovation and experimentation in a rare traditional form, Kaisika Puranam.
Shri S. Gobi has been performing the role of ‘Rakshasan’ in Kaisi Natakam at Thirukurungudi for 10 years. He has performed in various festivals at Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi and Chennai. Shri S. Gobi also received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India in 1995.
Shri S. Gobi is awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar of Sangeet Natak Akademi for the year 2009 for his notable talent in the field of major traditions of theatre Bhagavatha Mela of Tamil Nadu.
