Born in 1929 in Maihar, Madhya Pradesh, Shrimati Annapurna Devi imbibed the best of a long family tradition from her illustrious father Ustad Allauddin Khan who gave the world of music an unbroken line of distinguished musicians of the Senia gharana. Shrimati Annapurna was trained in Hindustani vocal music and Sitar, but is best known as a Surbahar player of rare excellence. She has made a singular contribution to instrumental music. An exceptional teacher, Shrimati Annapurna Devi has made a significant contribution by training many musicians of nationwide renown, including such artists as Shri Hariprasad Chaurasia, Nikhil Banerjee, Bahadur Khan, and Aashish Khan. She has been on the visiting faculty of the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai, for a number of years. For her outstanding musicianship, she has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan (1977), the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1991), and the Desikottama (D. Litt. Hon. Causa) of the Visva-Bharati University (1998). For her contribution to Indian music, Shrimati Annapurna Devi is elected Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi.
